Jeff Thomas is bringing art and history together as Carleton University hosts its upcoming conference entitled Champlain in the Ottawa Valley: History and Memory of an Encounter.
“History has always been an important component of my thought process, and the absence of history being taught in schools has been a focal point for me,” says Thomas, an urban Iroquois photographer based in Ottawa. “History was something I was able to pursue when I started working in the visual arts.”
In collaboration with Carleton, Thomas’ work from his Seize the Space series will be featured during the conference which runs Sept. 19 and 20. The colloquium will reflect on the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s passage up the Ottawa River and on the history.
